In recent years, the landscape of concussion management has evolved, becoming more nuanced and complex than ever before. Despite this advancement in our understanding, there remains a significant gap in the application of this knowledge within our communities, particularly in Durban.
The challenges we face range from inconsistent diagnosis practices—marked by both over diagnosis and under diagnosis—to premature return-to-play decisions and a lack of tailored rehabilitation for the affected areas of the brain.
This discrepancy not only highlights a disconnect between the latest medical research and its practical application but also underscores the need for a comprehensive, informed approach to concussion management in non-professional environments.
At the Sharks Medical Centre, we’ve witnessed first-hand these challenges and understand the critical importance of bridging this gap. That’s why we are proud to launch the HeadWise Concussion Program.
Our aim is to bring the same level of care and expertise that professional rugby players receive to our young athletes, ensuring their safety and well-being in school sports activities. This program is not just about managing concussions; it’s about setting a new standard of care, one that is informed, effective, and accessible.
Goals of the Program
1. Education
To empower athletes, parents, and coaches with the knowledge to recognise the symptoms and red flags of concussions, debunking myths such as the role of CT or MRI scans and neurocognitive software in diagnosing concussions.
3. Increased
Diagnosis Accuracy
Utilising baseline assessments to provide a more personalised approach, considering factors like ADHD and concentration abilities, and ensuring diagnoses are made by doctors trained in concussion management through World Rugby & SARU.
2. Awareness
To heighten understanding of concussion symptoms and the critical importance of not rushing the return to contact sports without a Graduated Return to Play (GRTP) protocol.
4. Tailored
Management
To offer care that aligns with the latest Concussion Consensus Statement, incorporating graduated return to learn and play protocols that are tailored to the individual needs of each young athlete. This comprehensive, multidisciplinary strategy involves doctors, biokineticists, and neuropsychologists working together to achieve the most precise diagnosis and management.

The Premier Concussion Management Program
HeadWise Plus stands as the cornerstone option of our concussion program, offering an all-encompassing solution for concussion management. This option is designed to guide young athletes from the moment of diagnosis through to their full and safe return to play. Known as the complete concussion program, HeadWise Plus ensures that every step of the recovery process is meticulously managed and supported by a team of multidisciplinary experts.
HeadWise Basic
Focused Concussion Management
The HeadWise Basic serves as the second option within our concussion program, catering to those seeking a focused approach to concussion diagnosis. This plan is particularly suited for families and schools that prefer to manage the post-diagnosis care independently, in a private capacity. While it emphasises the critical step of accurately diagnosing a concussion, the management and rehabilitation process following this diagnosis are to be undertaken externally by the participant’s chosen healthcare providers.
